Rapists come in forms and yet some get sentences more lenient than others. When no one teaches them the need for consent, the need for respect and they live oblivious to the reality of rape culture. Women are a thing to be controlled, just bodies.
It gets to me. When so many rape cases go unanswered, go un-investigated. When rape kits go unexamined. When women of color and transgender women are harmed and hurt and murdered every day. The media is so quick to make excuses for the rapist most notably depending on the color of his skin, his monetary value, his potential. Women are judged by their past before they even get a chance to address the issue.
I witnessed an embarrassing moment that I wish were different: I witnessed a group of successful women threatened by another strong woman in the room. With her haircut not up to their standards to soften her appeal, her prowess as a woman in charge, walking into the room with a meme on her phone depicting Hilary Clinton, that read "Bitches Get Shit Done. " And here I thought, OOOH GIRL, this is what i dreamed of. This is a woman who demands respect, as we all should! And yet, there were other women gathered in a side room to talk about her aggressiveness, her looks and the way she threatens them. If they can trade stories among themselves who think the same, well, that's good enough for them. Never daring to do the real thing. It all sounds to me like, "She can't be stable if she doesn't take shit" and I sit there begging to disagree.
So here's what we need to do: Never make excuses for rape. Never make excuses for men who abuse women no matter what. Let a woman be strong on her own merit because she will need it.
